Serenity Air Heating & Air Conditioning provides duct installation, replacement, sealing, inspection, cleaning, and airflow balancing for homes across Puyallup, Tacoma, Lakewood, Bonney Lake, Gig Harbor, and every community in Pierce County. If your rooms heat unevenly, your energy bills keep climbing, or you see dust blowing from the registers every time the system kicks on, the ductwork is usually the culprit. We find the problem, fix it with the right materials and methods, and measure the results before and after so you know exactly what improved. Call (253) 256-2914 or request service online.
The Department of Energy estimates that the average home loses 20–30% of its conditioned air through duct leaks. In Pierce County — where ductwork frequently runs through damp, unconditioned crawlspaces and poorly insulated attics — that number can be higher. Every leak wastes energy, pulls unfiltered crawlspace air into your living space, and forces your furnace or heat pump to work harder than it should.
Whether you’re building new, adding onto your home, or replacing a deteriorated duct system, we design and install ductwork that’s properly sized for your HVAC equipment and your home’s layout.
Duct sizing isn’t guesswork. We calculate airflow requirements for each room based on the heating and cooling load (from the Manual J calculation tied to your HVAC system), then design the duct layout — trunk lines, branch runs, supply registers, and return grilles — to deliver balanced air distribution throughout the house. Undersized ducts create high static pressure, noise, and restricted airflow. Oversized ducts waste energy and reduce air velocity, leading to poor mixing and uneven temperatures.
We work with sheet metal ducts (galvanized steel — the most durable and longest-lasting option), insulated flexible duct, and rigid fiberboard where appropriate. Every connection is mechanically fastened and sealed with mastic or UL 181-rated tape — not standard duct tape, which deteriorates within a year or two in unconditioned spaces.
Duct replacement is typically recommended when the existing system is over 15 to 20 years old, when you find crushed or disconnected flex duct in the crawlspace, when there’s visible mold or pest damage inside the ductwork, or when a new HVAC system installation requires different airflow capacity than the old ducts can deliver.
This is the single highest-ROI service we offer for homes with existing ductwork. Sealing the leaks in your duct system reduces energy waste, improves comfort, and keeps unfiltered crawlspace or attic air out of your living space.
We seal ducts using two approaches depending on the situation:
Manual sealing — our technicians access duct joints, seams, and connections and apply mastic sealant or UL 181-rated foil tape at every leak point. This is most effective when ductwork is accessible in crawlspaces, basements, or attics. We also insulate ducts in unconditioned spaces using foil-faced fiberglass or rigid board insulation to prevent heat loss and condensation.
Internal duct sealing — for ductwork buried inside walls, soffits, or other inaccessible areas, internal aerosol-based sealing technologies inject non-toxic polymer particles into the pressurized duct system. The particles collect at leak points and form a durable seal from the inside. The process is computer-monitored and produces before-and-after leakage measurements so you can see exactly how much the seal improved.
Either way, we perform a pressure test before and after to quantify the results. If we tell you we sealed your ducts, we can prove it.
Not sure what’s going on inside your ductwork? We find out. Our duct inspection process includes visual inspection of accessible sections for disconnected joints, crushed runs, deteriorating insulation, pest damage, mold, or moisture. We perform airflow measurement at supply and return registers to identify which runs are underperforming. Pressure testing quantifies total system leakage. And we check duct connections at the plenum, furnace, air handler, and equipment transitions — the areas where leaks are most common and most costly.
Duct inspection is especially important before any major HVAC equipment replacement. Installing a new high-efficiency furnace or heat pump onto a leaking, undersized duct system is like putting new tires on a car with a broken axle — the new equipment can’t deliver its rated performance if the distribution system is compromised.
Over time, dust, debris, insulation particles, pet hair, construction residue, and in some cases mold can accumulate inside your duct system. In Pierce County’s damp climate, crawlspace moisture adds another layer of risk — duct interiors in humid environments can develop mold growth that you’d never know about without inspection.
We clean ducts using source removal methods — agitating debris from duct walls and extracting it with high-powered negative air vacuum equipment. This isn’t a shop-vac-and-a-brush operation. Proper duct cleaning requires access to every run, and it should be followed by filter replacement and a system inspection.
We recommend duct cleaning when you observe visible mold inside the ducts or on other HVAC components, when there’s evidence of pest infestation (droppings, nesting material), after major home renovations that generate dust and debris, when dust blows visibly from supply registers when the system starts, or when the home changes ownership and the duct history is unknown.
If some rooms in your home are consistently too hot or too cold while others are comfortable, the problem is usually airflow distribution — not the HVAC equipment itself. Airflow balancing adjusts dampers, verifies register sizing, and measures CFM (cubic feet per minute) delivery at each supply point to make sure every room receives the conditioned air it needs.
We use digital anemometers and static pressure gauges to measure actual performance rather than guessing. Common fixes include adjusting manual balancing dampers in the trunk line, replacing undersized registers or grilles, correcting kinked or compressed flex duct runs, and adding return air pathways for rooms that are starved for circulation.
Rooms that are consistently hotter or colder than the rest of the house. Dust or debris visible around supply registers. Whistling, rattling, or popping sounds from the duct system. Your HVAC runs longer than it should without reaching the thermostat setting. Visible gaps or disconnections at duct joints in the crawlspace or attic. Musty or stale smells when the system runs. Higher energy bills with no change in usage or weather patterns.
If any of that sounds familiar, call us. A duct inspection takes less time than most people expect and tells you exactly where the problems are.

The Department of Energy estimates 20–30% of conditioned air is lost through duct leaks in a typical home. In Pierce County, where ducts often run through damp crawlspaces and poorly insulated attics, the actual loss can be higher. Sealing your ducts is one of the fastest ways to lower your energy bills and improve comfort without replacing any equipment.
The most common signs are rooms that won’t reach the thermostat set point, visible dust around supply registers, the HVAC system running for extended periods without satisfying the thermostat, and higher-than-expected energy bills. You might also notice musty odors — a sign that air from the crawlspace or attic is being drawn into the duct system through leak points. A professional pressure test gives you a definitive answer.
Yes, if there’s significant contamination. Sealing over a layer of mold, debris, or pest material doesn’t solve the underlying problem and can trap contaminants inside the system. We inspect first, recommend cleaning if needed, and seal afterward for the best results.
Sheet metal ducts can last 20 to 30 years or more with proper installation and sealing. Flexible duct typically lasts 10 to 25 years depending on material quality and whether it was properly supported during installation (crushed or sagging flex duct fails much sooner). Duct joints and seals degrade faster than the duct material itself, which is why periodic inspection and resealing is important even when the ducts themselves are in good shape.
Absolutely. If your current ducts are undersized, poorly routed, or deteriorated, your HVAC equipment is working against the distribution system every time it runs. Installing properly sized and sealed ductwork can improve airflow by 30% or more — which means better comfort, lower energy bills, and less strain on your furnace, heat pump, or air conditioner.

Paula was super helpful getting me scheduled and asked a few good questions upfront to understand what was going on. I wasn’t able to finish the assessment at first, but when I called back she got me in for the next day, which I really appreciated. Dylan called a couple hours before my appointment to see if he could come earlier, which worked out great. He showed up when he said he would, was really friendly, and knew exactly what he was doing. He fixed the issue and also gave me a few options/recommendations before he left. Overall, really great experience with both Paula and Dylan. I’d definitely recommend this company to friends and family.Posted on Google![]()
