Heating Services in Pierce County & Puget Sound, WA

Pierce County winters are wet, gray, and consistently cold enough to make a failing heating system more than an inconvenience — it’s a problem that affects your health, your sleep, and your energy bills. Serenity Air Heating & Air Conditioning provides complete heating repair, installation, and maintenance for homes across Puyallup, Tacoma, Lakewood, Gig Harbor, Bonney Lake, and every community throughout the Puget Sound. We work on gas and electric furnaces, heat pumps, ductless systems, and dual fuel configurations — and our NATE-certified technicians respond fast, diagnose accurately, and fix it right the first time. 550+ five-star Google reviews back that up.

What Heating Systems Do We Work On?

Not every home in Pierce County heats the same way. A 1970s split-level in Lakewood with a gas furnace has different needs than a newer build in South Hill running a ducted heat pump, or a converted cottage in Gig Harbor with baseboard electric heat and no ductwork at all.

Gas furnaces

we work on every type: single-stage, two-stage, modulating, condensing, and forced-draft models from all major manufacturers. Whether you need repair, maintenance, or a new installation, we handle gas furnace work across Pierce County. See our furnace repair page for diagnostics and common failure points, or our furnace installation page for system types and new equipment options.

Electric furnaces and air handlers

common in homes without gas service, especially in rural Pierce County. We service all electric heating systems including element-based furnaces and forced-air handlers.

Oil furnaces

less common in Pierce County but still found in some older homes. We service oil-fired heating systems including maintenance, burner tuning, and repair.

Heat pumps (air-source)

these systems heat and cool your home using refrigerant and a reversing valve, transferring heat rather than generating it. We install cold-climate heat pumps rated to perform efficiently well below freezing — a significant upgrade for homes still relying on older models that struggle in Puget Sound winters. We also repair all heat pump brands and system types. Learn more about options and sizing on our heat pump installation page, or see our heat pump repair page for common failure points and diagnostics.

Ductless mini-split heating systems

wall-mounted, ceiling cassette, and floor-mounted indoor units paired with an outdoor condenser. Ideal for homes without ductwork, additions, converted garages, and bonus rooms. We install and service Mitsubishi Electric, Bosch, Hisense, and other leading ductless brands. See our ductless heating page for details on zone configuration and system sizing.

Dual fuel / hybrid systems

a heat pump paired with a gas furnace. The heat pump handles the majority of the heating season at high efficiency, and the furnace kicks in automatically during the coldest stretches. For many Pierce County homeowners, this is the best-of-both-worlds setup.

Heating Repair Across Pierce County

When your heating system stops working on a cold January morning, you need a technician who shows up fast with the right parts and the experience to diagnose the problem accurately — not a salesperson.

Our repair technicians carry common failure components for furnaces, heat pumps, and ductless systems on the truck, so most heating repairs can be completed the same day. For complex issues where the repair cost approaches replacement territory, we provide a written estimate and walk you through the options honestly.

A system that won’t turn on or won’t stay running. This can stem from different causes depending on your equipment type — ignition-related on furnaces, refrigerant or defrost-related on heat pumps, electrical on ductless systems. We diagnose the specific failure, not just the symptom.

Uneven temperatures between rooms. This usually isn’t the heating equipment itself — it’s the ductwork. Leaky ducts, disconnected joints, or undersized runs are common in older Pierce County homes, and they can waste 20–30% of your heated air before it reaches the living space. See our air duct services page for more on this.

Rising energy bills with no change in usage. An aging heating system running at reduced efficiency will show up on your Puget Sound Energy bill before it shows up as a comfort problem. Whether it’s a furnace past 15 years or a heat pump past 12, declining efficiency is expected — and a tune-up or system evaluation can quantify how much you’re overpaying.

Unusual sounds or smells. Heating equipment shouldn’t bang, screech, rattle, or produce persistent odors during normal operation. These are signals that something needs professional attention before a minor issue becomes a major failure.

For furnace-specific problems and the repair-vs-replace decision, see our dedicated furnace repair page. For heat pump-specific issues, see our heat pump repair page.

Heating Installation — Finding the Right System for Your Home

Choosing between a furnace, heat pump, or ductless system isn’t just a preference — it’s a decision shaped by your home’s existing infrastructure, your fuel source, your insulation quality, and how you actually use each room.

We start every installation project with a Manual J load calculation. This isn’t optional and it isn’t a shortcut — it’s the only way to accurately determine how much heating capacity your home needs based on its square footage, ceiling height, insulation R-values, window count and orientation, air leakage, and Pierce County’s specific climate data (IECC Zone 4C, mixed-marine). Skipping this step leads to oversized equipment that short cycles and undersized equipment that can’t keep up on the coldest nights.

If your home has existing ductwork and natural gas service, a high-efficiency gas furnace — or a dual fuel system that pairs a heat pump with a gas furnace for backup — is typically the most efficient path. We help you compare single-stage, two-stage, and modulating options based on your comfort preferences and budget. See our furnace installation page for a detailed breakdown of furnace types.

If your home has ductwork but no gas service (or you want to move away from fossil fuel), an air-source heat pump is the natural choice. Modern cold-climate heat pumps deliver efficient heating well below freezing — a major improvement over models from even five years ago. They provide both heating and cooling from one system, and they qualify for the largest rebates currently available through Puget Sound Energy and the Washington State HEAR program.

If your home has no ductwork — common in older Pierce County homes with baseboard electric, wall heaters, or radiant heat — a ductless mini-split system is the most practical upgrade. No tearing open walls to install ducts. Each indoor unit operates independently, giving you zone-by-zone temperature control. A single outdoor condenser can support multiple indoor heads throughout the house.

Every installation includes refrigerant charging and verification (using current low-GWP refrigerants like R-454B for heat pump systems), electrical connection testing, thermostat configuration, permit coordination with Pierce County, manufacturer warranty registration, and a walkthrough so you understand how your new system operates.

Heating Maintenance — The Service That Pays for Itself

A heating system that runs without maintenance is a heating system that’s aging faster than it should. In Pierce County’s damp climate, coils corrode, condensate drains clog, and dust buildup on burners and sensors accelerates wear — none of which you’ll notice until something fails.

We recommend scheduling heating maintenance in early fall, before you need the system daily. For heat pumps that run year-round (heating in winter, cooling in summer), twice-annual service is the standard: once in spring for cooling season, once in fall for heating season.

For gas furnaces: burner and ignition system inspection, heat exchanger safety check, gas pressure verification, blower motor inspection, thermostat calibration, air filter replacement, flue and venting check, and carbon monoxide testing.

For heat pumps: refrigerant pressure check, coil cleaning (both indoor evaporator and outdoor condenser), reversing valve operation test, defrost cycle verification, electrical connection inspection, thermostat calibration, air filter replacement, condensate drain flush, and auxiliary/emergency heat strip testing.

Well-maintained furnaces last 15 to 20 years. Heat pumps typically last 12 to 15 years because they operate year-round. In both cases, annual maintenance can extend the upper end of that range significantly — and it keeps your manufacturer warranty intact, which often requires documented professional service.

Rebates and Incentives for Heating Upgrades in 2026

Washington homeowners have access to some of the strongest heating rebates in the country right now — particularly for heat pump installations.

Puget Sound Energy

offers rebates for qualifying heat pump systems, ductless mini-splits, and gas-to-electric conversions. Amounts depend on the system type and efficiency rating (HSPF2 for heat pumps, AFUE for furnaces).

funded through the Climate Commitment Act, this program provides point-of-sale discounts for income-eligible households. Heat pump installations can qualify for up to $8,000, and electrical panel upgrades needed to support a new heat pump may qualify for up to $4,000. Savings are applied directly to your invoice.

the Home Electrification and Appliance Rebates portion of the Inflation Reduction Act remains active in Washington. Income-eligible households (under 150% of Area Median Income) can stack these with state and utility incentives.

Note: The Section 25C Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit (the federal tax credit of up to $2,000 for heat pumps) expired December 31, 2025 following the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. It is not available for heating systems installed in 2026.

We help you navigate which programs you qualify for and handle the paperwork. Call (253) 256-2914 for a free estimate that includes a rebate assessment.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Should I get a heat pump or a furnace for my Pierce County home?

It depends on your home’s infrastructure and your goals. If you have gas service and existing ductwork, a high-efficiency gas furnace or a dual fuel system (heat pump + gas furnace backup) are both strong options. If you’re on electric-only heating, upgrading to a heat pump almost always makes sense — modern cold-climate models handle Puget Sound winters without issue, and they provide air conditioning in summer at no additional equipment cost. If you have no ductwork, a ductless mini-split heat pump is the most practical path. We evaluate your specific situation and help you compare options — no one-size-fits-all answer.

It depends on the equipment type, but the general signals are similar: the system is past its expected lifespan (15–20 years for furnaces, 12–15 for heat pumps), repairs are becoming frequent or expensive, energy bills are rising without a change in usage, or the system can no longer maintain a consistent temperature throughout the house. For furnaces, our furnace repair page covers the detailed repair-vs-replace framework including safety-specific triggers. For heat pumps, compressor failure on an aging unit is typically the equivalent decision point.

Once a year minimum — ideally in early fall before Pierce County’s cold, wet season begins. Heat pump systems that run year-round should be serviced twice annually. Regular maintenance prevents the most common mid-winter failures and keeps your manufacturer warranty valid.

AFUE (Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency) measures how efficiently a furnace converts fuel to heat — a 96% AFUE rating means 96 cents of every dollar’s worth of fuel becomes usable heat. HSPF2 (Heating Seasonal Performance Factor 2) measures the heating efficiency of a heat pump over an entire season under updated, real-world testing conditions. Higher numbers mean better efficiency in both cases. Our technicians help you compare efficiency ratings across system types so you’re choosing the right equipment for your home and budget.

Puget Sound Energy offers incentives for qualifying heat pumps and ductless systems. The Washington State HEAR program (funded by the Climate Commitment Act) provides point-of-sale discounts up to $8,000 for income-eligible households upgrading to heat pumps. The federal HEEHRA rebate program also remains active. The Section 25C federal tax credit, however, expired December 31, 2025 and does not apply to 2026 installations. We assess your eligibility and help you maximize every available incentive.

Paula was super helpful getting me scheduled and asked a few good questions upfront to understand what was going on. I wasn’t able to finish the assessment at first, but when I called back she got me in for the next day, which I really appreciated. Dylan called a couple hours before my appointment to see if he could come earlier, which worked out great. He showed up when he said he would, was really friendly, and knew exactly what he was doing. He fixed the issue and also gave me a few options/recommendations before he left. Overall, really great experience with both Paula and Dylan. I’d definitely recommend this company to friends and family.
